Read aloud — teacher / learner script

"Welcome to Week 30! Today we are learning about emergency preparedness. A good money plan prepares for changes and surprises. Think of a time you had to choose between two things. What did you choose and why? A good money decision starts by asking what we need, what it costs and what might happen next."

Stop & talk

What does this mean in your own words? Give one example from school, home, a shop or your community. You may invent an example if you prefer.

Story challenge

A learner must make a careful choice with limited money. What should they do?

Worked thinking model

  1. Identify the money amount, price or problem in the story.
  2. Write down what is known and what is missing.
  3. Compare at least two options.
  4. Explain your choice in a complete sentence. If numbers are given, show the calculation and check it.

My answer: Write the facts, show any calculation and explain your choice.

Let's play

Role-play the money decision with a partner using pretend money.

Game rules: Work in pairs. Partner A is the decision-maker and Partner B is the friendly challenger. You have three minutes to make a plan, two minutes to explain it, and one minute to swap roles. Award one star for a correct fact, one for clear reasoning and one for kindness.

Do it yourself — Task A

Draw a picture or make a small table showing the main idea. Label at least three things.

Do it yourself — Task B

Create a different scenario involving R100. Show how your decision changes if you have only R60. For older learners, include a trade-off and an explanation.

Real-life transfer

Describe one safe way to practise this skill without buying anything or sharing private family information.

FinKidz quick quiz — 4 questions

  1. Is a surprise repair an emergency expense?
  2. Explain one smart choice from today’s case.
  3. Name one situation where you would use this skill.
  4. Challenge: Make up one new example and explain the best decision.

Exit ticket

At home (optional)
